Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Bashisuogong (40°02′N, 76°34′E) about 70 km northeast of Kashi City, Xinjiang. It was named by Groeber in 1982.


Lithology and Thickness

Limestone. A suite of limestone formation, with micrite to fine-grained limestone, bituminous limestone and moderately thick-bedded limestone in the upper part; thin-bedded sandstone and calcareous conglomerate at bottom. Thickness 1270 m. In the vicinity of the Kalatuoluke pastureland, Akqi County, the formation consists of a suite of conglomerate, sandstone, clayey rock and limestone; and the thickness reduces to 100−200 m.

Lower contact

Unconformable contact with the underlying Devonian Tangaitaer Fm (or Kezirtag Fm elsewhere in this Kalpin region)

Distributed at Bashisuogong Mt. around Maidantawu in the western South Tianshan Mts.

Fossils

Brachiopods Gigantoproductus sp., Antiquatonia inscupta, Theniasella sp., Martinia minina, Plicatifera sp., etc. In the vicinity of the Kalatuoluke pastureland, Akqi County, the formation contains Brachiopods Choristites loczyi, Striatifera striata and Echinoconchus sp.; Corals Diphyphyllum sp. and Dibunophyllum sp. as well as gastropods, etc.
